Dental emergencies

Dental emergencies
If you have a dental emergency, including severe pain and infection, you can now get treatment in an urgent dental centre, commissioned by NHS England and NHS Improvement. There are 15 in the south west, with one in Bristol and one in Bath. These are fully staffed and equipped to provide treatment while high-street surgeries are closed due to Covid-19.

To get access, people should phone their own dentist to be assessed. All NHS dental surgeries should still be contactable. Out of usual surgery hours, people should call NHS 111. Those without a dentist or who cannot get through to their usual surgery should call 111.

Fancy an outing this weekend?

Fancy an outing this weekend?

Normally it would be the Maypole on Iron Acton VIllage Green, but why not think about Woodchester Mansion this year?

For further information go to https://www.facebook.com/WoodchesterMansion/

Like many other not for profit organisations running historic sites, they are finding ways to get virtual visitors - with on line activities and in many cases virtual tours. So you can visit all sorts of interesting places across the world from the comfort of your sitting room!

Think of a place, google for it and you will probably find a virtual experience!

Grants to help local groups

Need cash for something you are doing to help people during lockdown?
A reminder that Yate Town Council's COVID Battle Fund has cash available to any local group working on something to help our community in lockdown.

But also, the MAF Money - Member Allocated Funding 20/21 is now open to applicants.

If you wish to apply, please contact a South Glocs Councillor for this area (they are all members of the Lib Dem FOcus Team) to discuss your proposal. This can be done by telephone or email, to ensure  all remain secure during this health emergency. You will find our contact details at http://localfocus.blogspot.com/

The Cllrs will either issue you with an application or advise you to make contact with the Grants Team .

It is open for  all the usual projects  and the normal rules apply to them. BUT and this is important, the rules have been modified so COVID aid groups can apply. without the usual bureaucracy. (Begs the question of why you need the bureaucracy for anyone!)

For groups who are dealing with COVID there is  no requirement to register with the grants on-line system as this has been removed.  However, in support of the payment process and as these groups are informal they will need to have a partner who is able to receive payment. This can be a voluntary or community group registered to the Grants on-line system  (Yate Town Council is a registered group) or it can be done via a South Glos Councillor.

Ready, set, snap!
Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust’s annual wildlife photography competition is now open for entries, with new categories and bigger and better prizes.

GWT would love to see your images showcasing the stunning scenery and spectacular wildlife here in Gloucestershire. We appreciate that movement is currently restricted due to lockdown but we think the ‘on your doorstep’ category provides the perfect opportunity for capturing snaps of wildlife and wild places close to your home – either in your garden or whilst out enjoying your daily exercise.
In addition to the adult categories, there is also a juniors category for those aged 17 or under – a great excuse for a family photography session, and a fun activity for children to take part in.
We're looking forward to seeing your entries, whether it's a photograph that's been taken on a smartphone, compact camera or SLR.
To find out more about the categories and how to enter, head to www.gloucestershirewildlifetrust.co.uk/photocomp

RODFORD WAY ROADWORKS

South Glos have just notified us: "The construction of the mandatory cycle lanes scheme on Rodford Way will be starting this week. Please accept my apologies for the short notice, we would usually give a lot more notice when construction is due to commence, but due to the current pandemic the operations team are making decisions on what schemes they can construct on a day to day basis, based on a lot of variables such as staff availability, material availability, weather and so on. "

St George's Day

It is St George's Day...
so here is a little quiz, with answers. We normally are out helping at the St George's Day event outside the Heritage Centre on St Mary's Green, but of course it is cancelled. Have a good day.
For children there is a set of fun St George activities on the Yate Heritage Centre- Kids Zone
We actually don’t know much about St George but generally people agree on three things:
1) Was St George...
  • English?
  • Turkish?
  • Greek?

2) What did St George do for a living?
  • Priest
  • Soldier
  • Merchant

3)Which century did he live in ?
* 1st cen BC
* 2nd Cen AD
* 4th Cen AD

Ans He was from a Greek community in Cappadocia (which is now part of Turkey)
Ans He was a soldier in the Praetorian Guard (the personal guard) for the Roman emperor Diocletian
Ans He lived in 4th century AD (well it is thought he was martyred then)

But not much more is known. The dragon slaying didn’t turn up in the legend until the 11th century.
He seems to have been first treated as a saint in Syria, then it spread through the Middle East and really took off in Palestine. He is revered by Christians and Muslims throughout the Middle East.
So why did we end up with this Greek soldier who was revered in Syria?
The crusaders at the battle of Antioch in 1098 saw a vision of him. And then he appeared to them in Jerusalem. So it was the crusaders who brought back to England the idea of him as their Patron Saint. King Edward III of England in the 1300s used St George’s cross for his Order of the Garter and used it as a battle cry. And he became our Patron Saint.

CASh for small business / self employed

ARE YOU A SMALL BUSINESS / SELF EMPLOYED?
WANT SOME CASH as a GRANT no strong.
Have you applied for a grant, not a loan, a grant from South Glos Council? The government has given South Glos £39 Million to give to local small business and the self employed. This is in addition to the loans schemes and furlough.
But so far they have only managed to give out under half. They are working through applications as quickly as they can - but the real issue is that people are not asking for the cash. This is a grant you can get. Cash for just filling in one form. No strings. So what are you waiting for??

LAST MINUTE REMINDER _ COMMENTS CLOSE 24th April that's this Friday

LAST MINUTE REMINDER _ COMMENTS CLOSE 24th April that's this Friday
WARNING - DEVELOPERS WANT TO BUILD MORE HOUSES ON EDGE OF CHIPPING SODBURY
Beware, all sorts of planning applications are suddenly coming in. It's an ideal time for developers to put in applications, when people might not be paying attention and normal systems like leaflets to alert neighbours can't work. So we all need to be more alert.
Cotswold Homes have put in an application to build 97 more houses - between St John's Way and the common. They are building one side of the road onto the common, now they want to build the other side. Look at the map.
Please alert your neighbours and friends. They have until 24th April to comment, but don't leave it too late. This is a developer consultation, so to make sure your councillors also know what you think, Adrian Rush and Pat Trull would very much like it if you sent them a copy of your reply to the developers......... just email ensignp@globalnet.co.uk.
You will find a survey from the developer on their website, but . You may note they have already filled in question 2 for you and don’t give the info about layout to comment on question 2. You can only find this on the website www.cotswoldhomeschippingsodbury.co.uk and the questionnaire is there as well. Let's work together to get our message across clearly!

Education Update COVID

Education update
Schools – remain closed except for vulnerable children, children with education, health and care plans (EHCPs) and children of key workers but to be used only as a last resort. For Easter term break we are pleased to say all schools will have provision for key workers, and some will be open on the Bank Holidays, please contact your local school to find out what is available. In addition, we will be providing places for the children of NHS staff on Saturday (11 April) and Easter Sunday (12 April), where South Gloucestershire schools will be contacting NHS workers to offer them a place.

Free school meals - We are also working with schools to support those children who are entitled to a free school meal, ensuring each of them continues to receive the benefit despite many being at home during the current period.

GCSE and A level exams – Following the initial government announcement that both GCSE and A level exams were to be cancelled for summer 2020, it has now been confirmed that students who were due to sit A level, AS level or GCSE exams this summer will now receive a calculated grade. The calculated grade process will take account of a range of evidence including other assessments and mock results, with the approach standardised between schools and colleges.

Vocational qualifications - For those pupils undertaking technical or vocational qualifications, the priority is to ensure that student and adult learners can move on as planned to the next phase of their lives. The government is working with Ofqual and we expect an update shortly on this. If you have any specific enquiries, please contact your school or college.

Support for children and young people - Visit our education and support for children and young people page. If you have a safeguarding concern call us on 01454 866000. More information about safeguarding is available on the South Gloucestershire Children Partnership website. Our teams will be busy and we will need to prioritise help to the most vulnerable during this period

Garden Waste collection to restart on 27th

Garden Waste to restart
Brilliant news, South Glos has got on top of the waste issue and is going to restart garden waste collection from Monday 27th April.
And they are giving users a five week extension to their subscription to cover the missed weeks.
If you have purchased sacks for garden waste from South Glos you can book a one off collection from 27th April.
They are still short staffed, so it might not get collected on the scheduled day, so we will all have to be patient

Business grants to top £20m this week locally.

The latest update on grants to local  small businesses, which are being administered through the South Glos Council Business Rates Team. If you have not applied yet, do get in touch with them.

  • "Business grants – Our Business Rates team has been working hard, ensuring all the due diligence checks are covered to issue business support grants. The team will be working over the Bank Holiday weekend and we are issuing the small business support grants first as these can be assessed quickly. The government guidance is frequently updated, and we are refreshing our processes accordingly and have already prevented several fraudulent claims.
We expect to issue at least a further £20m over the next week and are doing everything we can to speed up the process so that all claims (a further £15m) are processed without delay.
  • Business Rates Reliefs -   The government announced that it will provide a business rates holiday for businesses and venues in the retail, hospitality and/or leisure sector. This will apply automatically to the next business rates bill in April 2020.
  • Financial hardship loans - In addition, any business experiencing financial hardship may make a claim for help with their business rates. In extreme cases of hardship, up to 100% relief can be awarded. For more info please visitwww.southglos.gov.uk/business/business-rates/business-rates-reductions/financial-hards

Yate Town Council holds its first on line council meeting

This week, Yate Town Council held its first ever on line meeting. Regulations permitting meetings to be held on line came into force on 3rd April and Yate held a finance committee on line on Tues 7th.
An exciting experiment. The Town Council is trying to minimise meetings, with officers consulting councillors by email. The Town Council is lucky that its standing orders already include good delegated powers, and we have an officer team who work with members so that the town council is getting things done, including making major changes to ensure the town council prioritises COVID and the safety of our community.

You can find out when town council meetings are from the town council webpage   http://www.yatetowncouncil.gov.uk/. The Annual Parish Meeting has been cancelled, as it is for all residents to come and comment on town issues - and doing it on line would exclude too many people who can't use zoom.  And some meetings have been cancelled but you can see which meetings are happening and how to attend as a resident.

Buses, trains and roads: if you have to get about

We hope you are able to enjoy the warm weather this weekend while staying at home. If you do have to make an essential journey, you may find the following travel updates useful.

Bus

With the Stay at Home restrictions in place and staff shortages, local bus operators are running reduced services. Don’t rely on timetables at the bus stop, in the apps or the real time displays. Instead check the latest timetables online:
The bus operators are also looking for feedback from key workers on the services:
Don’t forget that if you are a Diamond Travel Card holder, the time restrictions have been lifted so you can get free travel to supermarkets that are running early morning slots for older people.

Rail

For advice on rail travel across the UK, go to the National Rail enquiries website.
Train operators also have their own advice pages including:
And for all travel across the West of England check out the Travel West website.

Gipsy Patch Lane bridge replacement postponed

Work to move the new Gipsy Patch Lane railway bridge into place was due to start today and run until 20th April but it has had to be postponed.
The work needs over 150 people to be on site working closely together, so it would have been impossible to follow social distancing guidance. It’s vital to protect the safety of workers and stop the virus spreading.
Smaller numbers of workers are still on site doing preparatory highways work. The road remains closed and they continue to run shuttle buses for pedestrians who need to make essential journeys to the other side of the bridge. The new bridge has already been constructed offsite, ready for when the bridge move can be carried out.
Despite the postponement of the bridge move, the planned temporary closure of the railway between Bristol Parkway and Newport is still going ahead from Saturday 11 April to Sunday 19 April inclusive. This is so that other planned engineering work on the railway that can be carried out within government guidelines
goes ahead. During this period, train services between Bristol and South Wales are changed and buses replace trains between Bristol Parkway and Newport.
If a journey is absolutely necessary, we strongly advise you to check before you travel by visiting GWR.com/Check or nationalrail.co.uk. Please note online journey planners may be amended at short notice.
Any updates on this project will be posted on social media via www.facebook.com/sgloscpme and the project webpage at www.southglos.gov.uk/cpmetrobus. You can also sign up for a project newsletter on the web page. If you have queries concerning the rail line closure call the Network Rail 24-hour helpline on 03457 11 41 41.

Thank you to everyone who is keeping public transport running at this time.

COVID-19 local update

It looks like we’ll get some nice weather over the Bank Holiday weekend but it’s important to keep doing everything we can to stay at home. That way we will slow the spread of the virus to stop the NHS being overwhelmed and save lives. Our thanks to all the keyworkers working to save lives and keep services running this weekend.
If you have questions about the restrictions, the Government have provided an FAQ. Avon and Somerset Police will be increasing their patrols this weekend.

Reporting symptoms

If you’ve unfortunately experienced COVID-19 symptoms you can help the NHS to understand the virus better by filling in this survey.

Donating PPE

Does your business or other organisation have any supplies of Personal Protective Equipment that you can donate to the council, so that their frontline staff can help support vulnerable local people more safely? They need masks, gloves, aprons and hand sanitisers. Please email CambrianGreenDayServices@southglos.gov.uk if you can help.

Food and other essentials

The latest information from the supermarkets:
Don’t forget that large supermarkets are closed on Easter Sunday.
Many local businesses are finding ways to help.
Sadly more people are struggling financially and demand on the foodbanks has risen dramatically. North Bristol Foodbank had a 316% increase in demand in one month – you can make a donation here.

Pharmacies

If you need a pharmacy over the Bank Holiday weekend, you can find one open near you here.

Help for those whose jobs have been affected

The Future Bright scheme usually offers free career coaching, training and support to help people in low-paid work develop the skills and confidence to take the next step in their careers. To help in the current crisis, the West of England has temporarily expanded eligibility to:
  • Those who have been made redundant, laid off or are at risk of redundancy, as a result of the coronavirus pandemic,
  • Employees whose hours have been significantly reduced, and who therefore have a lower income (e.g. zero hours, cut from full to part time)
  • Self-employed workers, where their ability to earn has been severely impacted due to the nature of their business
  • Furloughed employees, if their reduced income means they are eligible for Universal Credit.
To find out more and sign up visit Sign up for Future Bright here or contact the local team at future.bright@southglos.gov.uk or call 01454 866008.
You can find out more about how South Glos Council is supporting residents through this emergency here.

Help for small businesses

If you are a local small business, South Glos Council may already have been in touch with you following the Government announcements about business support. If not, or you need more information, they have set up a page of information for businesses and employers.

Help for charities and community groups

The Quartet Foundation have launched a Coronavirus support fund to support groups who are supporting their communities. You can find out more about how to apply for a grant or how to donate to the fund online.

School admissions

South Glos Council say:
Primary school admissions: On-time applicants will receive an offer of a place on 16 April 2020 either via the online portal or by email. If you do not receive your offer, please contact us on 01454 868008 or AdmissionsandTransport@southglos.gov.uk
Secondary school admissions: Applications being dealt with as part of the second round continue to be processed. Details of second round offers will be sent to parents/carers via email during early May 2020.
Primary/secondary admission appeals: The council is monitoring government guidance for managing admission appeals. It is likely that alternative arrangements will be made in order to hold admission appeal hearings. Details to follow as soon as they are known.

Domestic violence

Sadly with so many people isolated there has been an increase in Domestic Violence. Under the restrictions you can still leave your home for your own safety and there is still help available. Find out more on the South Glos website.

Waste collections

Don’t forget that recycling is now only being collected fortnightly, on the same day as the black bin collections. You can put out extra recycling in containers no bigger than the green boxes. If you are doing projects at home or having a clear out, please don’t put out large amounts of waste if possible because the more rubbish there is to collect the longer rounds take. You can find out more about the changes to waste and recycling on the South Glos website and there is useful advice on home composting and reducing food waste on the South Glos Street Care Facebook page.
Charity shops, such as the St Peter’s Hospice ones, have asked people not to leave donations outside their doors. Instead please save items until after they re-open.
Both the Council and Avon Fire Service have asked people not to light bonfires. They can add to the problems of those dealing with breathing difficulties and risk putting more pressure on the emergency services if they get out of control.
If you decide to use one of the private waste services that are still running please make sure they have a waste carrier licence.

Libraries

Although the libraries are closed, library users can as always access eBooks, audio books and magazines online. As an added bonus during the closures you can use the Ancestry site to research your family history for free – usually the libraries only offer this on their own computers in the libraries.

Registrar services

All weddings and civil partnerships are cancelled until further notice. You can contact the registrar team by email for any advice you need.
The government has suspended the need to register a birth within 42 days. You can still apply for child benefit using your baby’s NHS number. You can also register your baby with your doctor before registering the birth.
Deaths can no longer be registered in person but you can now register a death by phone. When you call to book an appointment, you will be asked to provide your contact phone number and name for a call back by the registrar. Please make sure you are available to take the call back appointment, which will last about 30 minutes. You can book an appointment on 01454 863140.

Mental health

The NHS have provided some tips to help you if you are worried about the virus and MIND have provided an information hub.

Drug and alcohol misuse

If you are worried about yours or someone else’s substance misuse, you find out where to get help on the South Glos website.

Scams

Fraudsters may use the fact more people are staying at home, as an opportunity to operate doorstep scams. Action Fraud and Age UK have produced a video to explain how to protect yourself and others.

Where to find official information

There is a lot of mis-information being shared on social media. The following are the best places to go for official information:

What we are doing

Thanks to the restrictions we haven’t been able to deliver our planned spring Focus newsletter, but we are trying to keep you updated through our website, and facebook
