Free wellbeing sessions in Yate in January and February

Southern Brooks Partnership will be running a range of new wellbeing sessions in Kingswood, Patchway, Staple Hill and Yate starting in January and February - click here for session details.

All wellbeing sessions are free to attend for everyone. You can attend one class or as many as you like. Booking is required for all sessions (except drop-ins). Sessions are run as part of South Gloucestershire Wellbeing College.

New Community Learning Courses - many free

South Glos Council has launched its prospectus of new courses for 2017-2018. There will be information and enrolment sessions at Yate Library:
Tuesday 5 September - 10.00am to 12noon
Thursday 7 September - 5.00pm to 7.00pm

Celebrate National Libraries Day on Saturday

Our local libraries have a range of fun activities planned to mark National Libraries Day on Saturday 7 February.

As well as events and activities all library members who visit their local library on the day can:
  • reserve up to two items from the LibrariesWest catalogue free of charge
  • hire a DVD for half price
  • enter a free prize draw with the chance to win a tablet computer, a £25 voucher for a well-known online retailer and a range of bestselling books if they borrow at least three physical items

The council is also launching a Facebook eAudio reading group for people who find it difficult to attend a reading group but would still like to read the same book as others and share their thoughts afterwards. Chipping Sodbury Library, 10am

Storytime session for young children with Elmer the Patchwork Elephant. (Also at Yate Library on Sunday 8 February, 11.30am)

Get singing Thornbury
Thornbury Library, 10am to 11.30am
Hear the community choir performing outside Thornbury Library.

Many libraries will also be running a treasure hunt for children and a fun literary quiz for adults - pick up free treasure maps and quiz sheets from your library on the day.

New courses from Community Learning

Community learning works with adults aged 19 and over who have few formal qualifications to engage local residents back into learning with the specific aim of improving their skills for personal development, to find and succeed in work and to participate in family and community life.

New courses for January 2015:

Functional Skills - Maths and English. Start date to be confirmed - Yate Library 20 weeks.

IT for Work (TBC) Tuesday and Thursday 7-9pm. Start date to be confirmed - Yate Library 10 weeks

Introduction to Office Skills, started Thursday 8th January, Thurs 7-9pm - Yate Library 10 weeks

Free part time courses: South Glos Community Learning prospectus now available

The latest Community Learning prospectus for September 2014-July 2015 is now available offering a range of FREE part-time courses in our local area. These courses courses can help you gain a qualification, improve job skills, help your children's learning, and become more involved in your local community

Courses include Maths, English, computer and IT skills, job seeking and interview skills, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), confidence building, wellbeing and more.

How about "Getting the most from your tablet or iPad", for example? That's a 6 week course running at Yate Library.

Free courses for adult learners in South Glos

Would you like to
  • gain a qualification?
  • improve your job skills?
  • help your children's learning?
South Gloucestershire Community Learning are offering courses in English and Maths to Level 1 and 2 (Level 2 is equivalent to GCSE at A-C grade)

If English is not your first language, there are also short ESOL courses for people who need to improve their language skills for life in the community or for job seeking and work.

There are also IT courses that concentrate on building people's skills for the workplace and help them to search and apply for jobs online.

Other courses cover CV writing and interview skills, and Family Learning courses to help you help your child's learning.

There are enrolment sessions at Yate Library as follows:
  • Thursday 5 Sept 5 pm to 7 pm
  • Thursday 12 September 10 am to 12 noon
There are also enrolment sessions at other libraries on different days.

FREE courses for adults whose first language is not English

2 Free ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) courses starting in May:

English and Life in the Community – for those who have limited English language skills
and need to improve their speaking and listening skills
The Armadillo, 10am-12noon, 10 sessions, 8th May-17th July 2013

English for Work – for those who are more confident with English but need to improve
their skills for job seeking and the workplace
The Armadillo, 1pm-3pm, 10 sessions, 8th May-17th July 2013

There will be an assessment and enrolment session at Yate Library
on Tuesday 30th April from 2-4pm.  Please come along - pre-enrolment is essential

New courses - IT for the workplace and for job seekers

South Glos have announced two new courses designed to improve local people's IT skills:

IT for the Workplace


This course is specifically for those requiring skills for the workplace (including voluntary work)

- Do your IT skills need an overhaul to keep up with the demands of your job?
- Do you want to improve your IT skills for your CV?

This FREE course will equip you to use Microsoft Office software for use in an office environment

The course will include:
•    Word
•    Excel
•    Internet
•    Mail Merge
